Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Nashville

Popcorn ceilings collect dust, hold onto cooking and pet smells, stain, and make a room look decades older than it is. We scrape them off, smooth the ceiling, and paint it, so you get a clean, modern ceiling and a house that's ready to live in or sell.

What you get

  • Furniture moved or covered, floors and walls sealed in plastic before anything starts
  • Texture softened with water and scraped off, not dry-sanded, to keep dust down
  • Nail pops, cracks and seams repaired
  • Ceiling skimmed smooth (we finish ceilings smooth only, no retexturing)
  • Primed and painted with flat ceiling paint
  • Daily cleanup and a full cleanup and walkthrough at the end

Our process

  1. Walkthrough and estimate. We look at the ceiling, its height, whether it's been painted, and how old the house is. On homes built before about 1980, we test the ceiling for asbestos ourselves before any scraping starts.
  2. Prep and containment.
  3. Wet scrape.
  4. Repair and skim coat. Usually 2-3 thin coats with drying time between.
  5. Prime and paint.
  6. Cleanup and walkthrough.

How long it takes

Every ceiling is different, so timing is case by case. We'll give you a timeline with your estimate after we see the rooms.

What affects the price

Every ceiling is different, so we price each job after seeing it. The main things that affect cost:

  • Square footage of the ceilings
  • Ceiling height (vaulted and stairwell ceilings need more setup)
  • Type of texture, and whether the popcorn has been painted over
  • How much drywall repair shows up after scraping
  • Skim coat and refinishing to get a smooth ceiling
  • Painting, which is included
  • Moving furniture and protecting floors and walls

FAQ

Do popcorn ceilings have asbestos? Some do, mostly in homes built before about 1980. On those homes, we test the ceiling for asbestos ourselves before we do any scraping.

Can you remove popcorn that's been painted? Yes, it takes longer because paint keeps water from soaking in, and that's reflected in the estimate.

Do I have to leave the house? We recommend it. Popcorn removal is messy work, so most homeowners are more comfortable staying elsewhere while we're working, and we seal off the rooms we work in.

Smooth or retextured? We finish every ceiling smooth. We don't offer retexturing.

Will it help when I sell? Buyers see popcorn as a dated house. A smooth, freshly painted ceiling is one of the visible updates that helps a listing photograph well.

Do you paint the walls too? Yes. Many clients do ceilings and walls together so the room is finished in one visit.
